Volunteer days
We run periodic volunteer days and are grateful for the help of our Thriving Wild community to look after the land and make it more beautiful and nurturing for all beings. We share a warming soup and stories around the fire, and of course lots of cake!
We also love these events to gather input in shaping the organisation that we become as we slowly grow and improve. We update you on the plans we have and gather your feedback ideas and aspirations too, all for another but equally important type of cooking pot!
In Spring 2025, a group of friends and families removed hundreds of tree guards, built a new raised vegetable bed, renovated the kitchen area, dressed the barn with woodchip and weaved our willow dome. We felt buoyed by all the progress and went home with grins on our faces.
If you would like to join us for our next volunteer day, we'd love to have you! Email clare@thrivingwild.org.uk
Creating a wetland habitat
Many of you will remember the rains of winter 2024, which flooded some of the roads leading to the Field, made a mess of our working areas, and got quite a few of our cars stuck in the mud! We thought we could do something better with all that water, so we decided to divert it to enrich the wetland habitat area in the field.
Using a grant from Wessex Water through the Dorset Community Foundation, we dug and installed drainage ditches across the field, channelling the water to the wetland, and planted a new hedge. Thanks to the efforts of the marvellous owner of the Field, helped by willing volunteers who cleared ditches, collected stones, and counted plants, the wetland is now growing, and the risk of flooding in the rest of the field is much reduced. Over time, with the new hedge and enhanced wetland, nature will celebrate!
